Before entering the digital era, large, well-known companies and government offices were almost always the target of job seekers. However, along with the rapid development of technology, startup companies have started to appear, as if presenting a new option for fresh graduates who are developing their careers.    

Startup VS Conventional.

Startup is a company that has just started and is engaged in technology development. A company can be categorized as a startup if it has three elements, namely founder, investor, service product.

The first factor that distinguishes startups from conventional companies is the source of funds. A founder initially founded the company independently. When it has developed and shows promising potential, funding will come from third parties or investors. Whereas in conventional companies, apart from the founders of the company, funding will be taken from the profits or profits generated.

The next difference lies in the purpose of the business. A Startup is more focused on growth or business growth, by prioritizing innovation. That’s why we often hear of these companies conducting cash-burning activities in the early stages, with the aim of finding markets and developing business models. Of course, the risk is too big. In contrast to conventional companies, whose main goal since its inception is to collect as much profit as possible.

In terms of organizational structure, startup companies generally have a horizontal hierarchy, where superiors and subordinates can communicate directly and in two directions. Unlike conventional corporate culture, which is still bureaucratic.

Characteristics of Gen Z and Millennials.

Employees and prospective employees of Startup companies are now dominated by the younger generation. One of the reasons could be that the characteristics of millennials (born in 1980 – 1995) and Gen Z (born in 1996 – 2015) are considered to be compatible with the Startup company culture.

Even though they were born at different times, these two generations have some similarities. One of them is technology literacy. The millennial generation had experienced the transition before and after the creation of the internet, while Gen Z was immediately born in the digital era.

However, both are considered as tech savvy who are enthusiastic about keeping up with the times. Of course, this factor is in line with Startup which is a technology-based company.

In addition to technological prowess, Gen Z and millennials also have similar traits, which are freedom-loving, open-minded and like attention or recognition. These qualities are also in line with the feel of working in a flexible and collaborative Startup.

1. Wide job opportunities.

As a company that is relatively new and continues to grow, the majority of startups are still looking for more workers to fill their offices. The recruitment process also tends to be simple and uncomplicated.

Until now, job opportunities in the Startup field are still wide open, including for interns and fresh graduates. Even the company considers internal and first jobber ideas fresh and high enthusiasm for learning.

2. Likes challenges.

Generally, in the early days of work, a fresh graduate or an intern is still given light responsibilities because they are still considered ‘children’. Not so when working at Startup.

This point is one of the most popular reasons why many fresh graduates want to work at Startups. The salary offered tends to be higher than entry level in other companies.

Although not mentioning specific numbers, the majority of survey respondents agree on this. They consider that the wages offered are proportional to the responsibilities and obligations imposed.

However, keep in mind that each company has different standards and policies. The amount of salary, allowances, and bonuses will also depend on the skills and experience you have.
